#MetroCamp

MetroCamp merges two significant conferences—Metro ON Line and EnergyCamp—into a unique event that reflects the challenges of modern cities, buildings, and energy. This year’s theme is ARCH, encompassing three symbolic layers that interconnect throughout the program and the overall atmosphere of the event:

  • Architecture – modern and intelligent, yet built on solid, time-tested foundations.
  • Archaeology and archaic principles – revisiting the wisdom of the past, which may hold the key to sustainable future solutions.
  • Archetypes – understanding fundamental patterns of human behavior and thinking, which also play a role in the development of artificial intelligence today.

The conference program will address current challenges related to digitalization, automation, smart city and energy management, while also returning to timeless principles of sustainability, stability, and long-term vision.

Expert discussions will offer insights into the use of AI in IT and energy, particularly in facility management, infrastructure maintenance, and operational cost optimization. Panel discussions will bring together AI experts, municipal representatives, global technology leaders, IT integrators, and telecommunications companies to analyze the key challenges and opportunities in digitalization and automation.

The event will also cover ESG regulations, smart grid solutions, and IoT technologies in energy. Participants will explore practical solutions for building automation, healthcare facility optimization, and sustainable smart technologies.

The highlight of the program will be the MetroCamp ARCH Party, inspired by Ancient Egypt—the cradle of advanced architecture and knowledge. This informal segment will provide a space for networking among experts, technology leaders, and municipal representatives.

OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE

Support of education and motivation of young people

One of the main goals of the conference is to support education, motivation of young people and their active involvement in global challenges while allowing them to learn more about the ethical development of their talent and creativity. Therefore, over 300 talented young IT students are going to get an opportunity to attend the conference for free.

At the same time, we are going to financially support: young talents from socially disadvantaged families, implementation of student projects in the (f)ITcubator in the city of Poprad as well as the rescue of beech forests and development of ecotourism in the POLONINY & TOKAJ wine region.

    • 11:30 amAncient Yet Modern: What Do Ancient Egyptian Cities Teach Us?
      Speakers
Dr. phil. Veronika Verešová, Slovenská akadémia vied
      11:30 am - 11:50 am

Ancient Egypt is still full of treasures - but not only the golden and glittering ones. It is mainly the millennial experience and knowledge of this fascinating civilization that are beneficial to us in the modern world. This is especially true of the life of ancient Egyptian cities and their inhabitants, which remained hidden in the shadow of the pyramids for a long time.

Their research in recent decades, in which a team of Slovak archaeologists and Egyptologists from the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Slovak Academy of Sciences also participates, reveals many aspects that bring us closer to the ancient Egyptians than ever before. The cities of the pharaohs often solved similar challenges to those of today: water management, organization of public space, hygiene or social cohesion.

In the lecture, we will look together at where and why they built their cities, how they planned and implemented the construction, how they used space and local resources, and how they adapted to climatic and political changes. Last but not least, research into cities reveals to us the secrets of their inhabitants, how they lived and worked, where and how they worshipped their mysterious deities, and how they made their daily lives more enjoyable.

      Speakers
Igor Wzoš, Slovak Smart City Cluster
      2:00 pm - 2:10 pm

From the time we built cities out of stone to nowadays, when we build them out of data, we have been guided by the same behavioral archetypes: the desire for order, freedom, knowledge, care, or revolt. As the population of cities ages – both physically and mentally – there is a need for a paradigm shift: from city management as a machine to conscious self-governance as a living organism. The archetypes of generations are now intertwined with the development of artificial intelligence, which itself is becoming a new actor in the urban environment.

Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) represents a proven tool for increasing energy efficiency of public buildings without direct impact on public debt. However, new legislation and Eurostat methodology requirements limit the use of EPC only to energy-payback measures, thus preventing comprehensive building renovation in a single project. The presentation will introduce innovative business models that combine EPC with construction contracts and various forms of financing, thereby enabling the implementation of more extensive renovation projects including non-energy components. The discussion will focus on barriers, solutions, and practical examples of using these models as tools for urban modernization and sustainability.

      12:00 pm - 1:15 pm
We invite you to a guided excursion to the Podtatranské Museum in Poprad, where you can witness with your own eyes an extraordinary archaeological discovery known as the “Slovak Tutankhamun.” This is the grave of a Slovak aristocrat from the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries, which amazed both experts and the public with its preservation and the richness of its grave goods – from a wooden bed with bronze fittings to glass vessels, fine textiles, and imports from the Roman Empire. The exhibition ranks among the most valuable in Central Europe and offers a unique insight into life and death during the Migration Period. Let yourself be drawn into a story that connects ancient history with modern archaeology.
